When I first learned about Usenet a couple of years ago, I went looking for a reliable and up-to-date comparison of all the usenet newsgroup servers available. I searched everywhere and I found nothing that gave a thorough description of the differences between various Usenet providers.

What are the Usenet Newsgroups?
Usenet is the oldest form of internet file sharing and the biggest article (can be any type of information) source available with over 100,000 categories. Until recently, usenet newsgroups were difficult to navigate and find what your looking for and were used only by universities, professionals, and hardcore internet junkies. Now, usenet server providers are creating applications that can search newsgroups for the info you want much the same way as searching for a web site. This makes it much easier for casual users to access the newsgroups.
Almost any file, picture, music, movies, game, or program can be downloaded from super-fast reliable dedicated servers. And the best thing is that all newsgroups are constantly updated so that the content is always new and fresh.
Uncensored and Unrestricted Content:

Who supplies all of the content for the Usenet Newsgroups?
All files and text found in the newsgroups is provided by individual users who post text, files, images, movies, etc. These users generally believe in freedom of expression and have a common goal of sharing information. |

Can I upload (post) new files or articles to the Usenet Newsgroups?
Yes, anybody is allowed to upload files and text. You can also make a new newsgroup if you can't find one that fits the type of information you want to upload. Once you send your post, your usenet provider is then responsible for propagating the message out to the rest of the usenet newsgroup servers and throughout the world. Most usenet providers do a good job of this and your post can usually be seen on all servers within 24 hours. |

I have privacy concerns, is usenet for me?
Most usenet newsgroup providers state that they offer anonymous and unmonitored access and will not log your ip address, download dates, or any identifiable information. Unlike peer-to-peer file sharing applications, all of the information is coming from a dedicated server, so no one else can see what files your downloading. Uploading information and posts on the other hand is not completely anonymous.
Some will go a step further by providing access through SSL encrypted servers to ensure that your data remains private.

Can I search through Usenet Newsgroup listings?
Yes, some usenet providers offer a search engine with their browser package. Until recently, you could not search the newsgroups, and instead you would find the newsgroup your interested in, and 'subscribe' to it. You would then be able to view a list of all the individual posts (text, images, video, programs, etc.) within that newsgroup. How are Usenet Newsgroups organized?
The newsgroups are organized in a hierarchy with each level separated by a dot.
Example:
alt.binaries.erotica
alt.binaries.erotica.teen
alt.binaries.erotica.teen.asian
New posts can be uploaded to any level in the hierarchy. |

Are there any FREE newsgroups available?
Yes, but they only give you access to text postings, which means:
• NO Binaries, games, movies, music, software, photos or images
• Only Text postings available through free newsgroups like google groups, yahoo groups
• These groups tend to have filtered and censored content. |
